What is CGM?

A continuous glucose monitor is a device used for monitoring blood glucose on a continual basis by people with either type I or type II diabetes. A continuous glucose monitor takes a reading on set intervals with a small electrode placed under the skin and held in place by an adhesive. Source

Available CGMs

Dexcom G6

Always know your glucose number and where it's headed with the Dexcom G6 Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) System — FDA-permitted for making diabetes treatment decisions with zero finger-sticks and no calibration.

  • Zero finger-sticks - The Dexcom G6 CGM is FDA-permitted to make diabetes treatment decisions without confirmatory finger-sticks or calibration.
  • Glucose readings right on your smart device - Always know your number with a quick glance at your smart device. Trend lines show you where your glucose levels are heading and how fast they’re getting there.
  • Data sharing - Share your glucose data with up to 10 followers.
  • Customizable alerts & alarms - Set your range and get notified when you’re heading high or low.
  • Acetaminophen blocking - Get accurate glucose readings even when taking acetaminophen.

The FreeStyle Libre 14 day sensor is part of a continuous glucose monitoring system, checking your readings day and night, and is accurate for insulin dosing.

  • Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) system available to eligible Medicare beneficiaries and others.
  • Blood glucose monitoring with minimized finger-sticks using a small glucose sensor worn under the skin and connected to a circular patch, slightly larger than a quarter.
  • Worn on the upper arm with 14-day wear time, allowing the user to view blood glucose levels with the swipe of a hand-held reader.
  • More effective diabetes management and better treatment decisions.

Medicare Criteria

Continuous Glucose Monitors

Therapeutic CGMs and related supplies are covered by Medicare when all of the following coverage criteria (1-6) are met:

  • 1. The beneficiary has diabetes mellitus; and,
  • 2. The beneficiary has been using a BGM and performing frequent (four or more times a day) testing; and,
  • 3. The beneficiary is insulin-treated with multiple (three or more) daily injections of insulin or a Medicare- covered continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII) pump; and,
  • 4. The beneficiary’s insulin treatment regimen requires frequent adjustment by the beneficiary on the basis of BGM or CGM testing results; and,
  • 5. Within six (6) months prior to ordering the CGM, the treating practitioner has an in-person visit with the beneficiary to evaluate their diabetes control and determined that criteria (1-4) above are met; and,
  • 6. Every six (6) months following the initial prescription of the CGM, the treating practitioner has an in- person visit with the beneficiary to assess adherence to their CGM regimen and diabetes treatment plan.

When a therapeutic CGM is covered, the related supply allowance is also covered.

If any of coverage criteria (1-6) are not met, the CGM and related supply allowance will be denied as not reasonable and necessary.

James Binson, the Binson Family, and Staff at Binson's Home Health Care Centers, are excited to announce a partnership with actor, Wilford Brimley. Wilford brings his knowledge and experience of the medical supply industry to promote diabetes awareness and enhance Binson's home delivery business for diabetes testing supplies. Diagnosed with diabetes in 1979, Brimley began working to raise awareness of the disease. The American Diabetes Association honored Brimley in 2008 with an award to recognize his lifetime of service.

When making the announcement, James Binson, said, I've known Wilford Brimley for over 20 years and we are thrilled to have him on our team. I know our customers will respond the same way we did, with trust and enthusiasm. Binson's was awarded multiple contracts under Medicare's recent competitive bid program, including the National Mail Order Contract for Diabetes Supplies and feels Wilford is the perfect person to promote this message. Wilford Brimley agreed, I understand the difficulties associated with diabetes first hand, from finding the best meters, dealing with medicare and insurance companies and we'll use my 'no nonsense' approach when explaining the benefits of Binson's products and services.
