DARKEN UP
Sales at Moen® Incorporated Reveal Faucet Finishes
Are Stepping Over to the Dark Side

North Olmsted, Ohio…Move over light woods and neutral colors. Consumers are heading to
the dark side for their home décor. Dark woods, rich paint colors and dark finishes are the new
trend today.
According to Judy Riley, Moen’s vice president of design, “Consumers want everything in their
home to coordinate, from the walls to the lighting, to the fixtures and appliances. With dark
colors becoming increasingly popular, even the faucets need to tie in with this look.”
And this demand is driving an increase in sales of faucets and accessories with rich finishes like
Wrought Iron and Oil Rubbed Bronze. In fact recent sales figures from Moen demonstrate
dramatic increases in Oil Rubbed Bronze and Wrought Iron finishes amidst decreasing sales of
Glacier (white) and Polished Brass.
“From 2004 through 2005, Oil Rubbed Bronze finishes had a 328 percent increase in sales,”
added Riley. “At that same time we saw Polished Brass dip by more than 60 percent and
consumer preference for White finishes drop off by 20 percent.”

Embrace Sophisticated Colors
Carrying over to walls and trim, many paint companies are responding in turn with shades that
exemplify strong worldly colors, as well as relaxed, earthen tones.
According to Peggy Van Allen, Pratt & Lambert Paints Color Specialist, “Color is vital in a home
and should be used to create a bridge between furnishings and accessories, while setting the
overall mood of a room.”
Palettes that include rich browns, deep blues, wine reds, blacks and greens are making
dramatic color statements that convey warmth and sophistication. Visit local home
improvement centers or flip through a favorite home décor magazine for inspiration on
embracing these dark tones in your own home.
Dark Woods
Open any home furnishingscatalog and you’ll be struck by the increase in furniture painted
black or shown in deep chestnut or cherry. Tables, chairs and shelving are displayed in darker
colors.
This trend has carried to cabinetry in the kitchen and bath as well with similar styles and colors.
According to Aristokraft®, cabinetry styles and finishes are driven by furniture trends and
consumer desire to have a similar theme or color style throughout their home.
Black is Back
You may not realize it, but chrome faucets will soon get a run for their money in terms of
popularity as manufacturers, such as Moen, introduce stylish new products, such as its new
Medora™ kitchen faucet in a Matte Black finish. This elegant single-handle pullout faucet has a
sleek silhouette and makes a dramatic statement at the sink with its deep rich coloring.
Additionally, Oil Rubbed Bronze and weathered Antique Nickel are increasingly popular finishes
and most manufacturers have introduced faucets and coordinating accessories with these tones
in a variety of styles and prices. These products allow consumers to carry their design scheme
into their kitchens and baths while adding depth and richness.
So take a walk on the dark side and incorporate this hot new design trend into your home.
