Incontinence is something that many people live with today. One of the most important things to pay attention to when dealing with incontinence is how their skin reacts to the re-introduction of the incontinence supply to their lives. Now incontinence supplies affect different people differently but there is a general set of information that you can use to ensure that your skin is in the best condition throughout your incontinence use.

The first step is to better understand how incontinence products affect the skin. The different conditions that cause the breakdown of skin are maceration (waterlogged), dermatitis or rashing, infection due to bacteria, increase in pH conditions to cause irritation and even fungal infection due to the generally warm and dark location.

The second step in this process is to understand how to prevent these conditions from taking action against you. They are as follows:

  • Change incontinence products as soon as soiling occurs to avoid excessive skin wetness
  • Use a barrier ointment, or rash cream, to minimize direct contact with urine and feces
  • Cleanse gently to avoid friction
  • Stay hydrated and eat well to maintain skin integrity.

Finally there are 3 major steps to take to ensure that your skin is indeed healthy. The first of the steps is ensuring that you clean yourself. This seems simple and essential but also is a major way to understand and prevent the integrity of the skin layer. The second of the steps is to make sure that you condition and protect the skin. You have to protect the skin layer from irritation, drying and bacteria along with many other problems that may develop once you have spent time using incontinence supplies. The third step is to make sure to keep your skin dry. This is important because many of the problems that can occur throughout the time of using incontinence supplies is from having moisture trapped in the area.
