DVT Awareness

March 14, 2018 | R. Stiteler

This March is considered to be Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) month. So today let's focus on what exactly what this condition is and what it's most common symptoms are to help you recognize this situation within your relatives or even yourself. DVT is a medical condition that "occurs when a blood clot forms in one or more of the deep veins in your body, usually in your legs" (Mayo Clinic). It can be caused by many different reasons. It can be caused by things like an inherited blood-clotting disorder, prolonged bed rest, pregnancy, smoking, cancer, heart disease, and even something as simple as sitting down for extraneous periods of time (flying/driving long distances).

However there is a silver lining to all of this, there are many different ways to recognize this condition in either your loved ones or yourself. The first of the symptoms you might recognize is going to be swelling on the affected leg as well as sharp pain in your calf that may start as cramping/soreness and escalate quickly. Another way to recognize the condition is by having red or discolored skin on the leg due to internal irritation and an abnormal feeling of warmth in the effected leg not normally recognized.
